New service enables FREE Internet broadcasts to millions - Jetcast.com
MeTV Network, Inc., announced the launch of its ground breaking new Internet broadcasting service – Jetcast® (www.jetcast.com). The new Jetcast service enables broadcasters, content owners and content creators to transmit video and audio worldwide to millions of simultaneous users, for free. No longer must broadcasters fear the costs associated with large audiences or long viewing times. The new Jetcast service eliminates bandwidth expense and allows broadcasters to retain their channel’s advertising revenue. Jetcast makes Internet broadcasting a profitable venture without requiring the relinquishment of rights to the content, unlike Google Video.
“The biggest hurdle to date for advertising supported Internet broadcasts has been the high cost of bandwidth,” said Jeff Pescatello, co-founder of MeTV Network, Inc. “Until today, if you used a content delivery network like Akamai to deliver your Internet channel, you would pray your audience would not get too big or watch too long. The cost of the bandwidth could crush you. Now, it doesn’t matter how many people watch or how long they watch. Your costs are fixed at zero”, said Pescatello.
The www.jetcast.com website, launched in alpha mode, serves as an aggregation point for the best television programs, music, sports and entertainment on the Internet. It will grow in functionality and content over the coming months. Any broadcaster may use the free services to reach small, medium or even very large audiences using Windows Media and other standard formats.
“The Jetcast service was developed by broadcasters for broadcasters. Broadcasters can now utilize the Jetcast Server application to create live channels with either an originating channel stream, a directory of media files, or a single media file. Jetcast also has free advanced server applications and services for larger broadcasters. There are no catches or gimmicks. The Jetcast service is an open service”, stated Jeff Pescatello, MeTV Network co-founder.
With the Jetcast protocol services, broadcasters can have their content on Jetcast.com, place free or subscription channels on their own website, integrate their own proprietary player designs with their Jetcast channel, use the standard Jetcast player externally, or even open their channel and player for viral marketing.
Jetcast streams utilize Jetcast’s massive grid distribution technology to deliver high quality audio and video to audiences worldwide. The Jetcast network is a secure protocol for use by those who want to offer either free or subscription channels to audiences. Jetcast is a unique offering and aims to break traditional barriers and burdens, without requiring signup fees, fixed costs, or variable costs for small and large broadcasters.
To learn more about the services for broadcasters, please visit http://www.jetcast.com. The Jetcast team will work with broadcasters to integrate their content offerings and to help in any way.
About MeTV

Technical Overview of Jetcast
What is Jetcast? (Start Saving With The 2nd User)
Jetcast is a great way to broadcast video and audio on the Internet. A commercial broadcaster can use it to save bandwidth costs, or anyone can become a broadcaster without the costs of a powerful server and vast bandwidth. Using Jetcast, you can serve infinite online users.
How does Jetcast work?
Jetcast is an optimized network, which is tailored for media delivery. Every user in the Jetcast network is also a supplemental broadcaster or partial broadcaster to assure efficiencies. The original broadcaster provides bandwidth for the first level users, the first level users share their data that feeds other users, and the broadcaster provides supplemental bandwidth for the next levels of users, while local groups also provide additional efficiencies on the fringes of the Internet. All resources construct a grid network and are centrally brokered. The Jetcast network does not clog the Internet. It provides efficiencies that can not be traditionally achieved otherwise.
Jetcast also applies a technology to make firewall and NAT (network address translation) traversal. In the Internet, 48% of users are behind an NAT router, and 80% of users are using a firewall. NATs and firewalls can block the procedure of a connection establishment, and this can make it hard for an application to work correctly. Jetcast can traverse 90% of firewalls and NATs.
Features
* State-of-the-art technology. It makes your channel more available and stable.
* Minimal delay - 1 minute.
* Fast buffering – 10 to 30 seconds.

How To Broadcast (Jetcasting)
Subjects Covered:
A) Requirements
B) What To Do
C) Three Ways To Jetcast
D) How To Encode
A) Requirements.
You should have the following:
1. Capable PC/server to run the applications. It is preferred that you have a 1Ghz or greater capability, which is a Pentium 3 or above. The more RAM that you have is better.
2. Broadband connection. Broadcasters will need 280k upstream to broadcast a 56k video or audio channel. The Jetcast Server software produces normally up to 5 outbound streams to satisfy the grid network requirements for infinite users. The bottom line is that you save bandwidth starting with the 2nd simultaneous user. A 200k video channel will normally need 1mg upstream to operate a channel for infinite users. If you want to have a 300k+ video channel, it will require a higher multiplier than 5 upstreams to serve the current US broadband standards of 300k upstream.
3. Encoded Content. (Please see the How To Encode section below.) Whether you are encoding on the fly or archiving, you can Jetcast. The Jetcast Server software can accept asf, windows media, real media and MP3 (we are working on Flash .flv). If you have webcam software to provide encoded content in Windows Media, Real Media, or MP3 formats, we show you how to create a channel below. If you want to broadcast a channel with encoded files, we show you how to do that below also. After you determine your upstream capabilities of your broadband connection, calculate your optimum bit rate to support 5 outbound streams and encode your content at that bit rate. For example, a 300k upstream can handle a 56k bit rate (x) 5 upstreams = 280k upstream. (Note: The further you are below your capacity will be better for broadcasting a higher quality channel.)
4. Jetcast Server software. You can find the Jetcast Server software in the Help, Downloads section.
B) What To Do.
To start broadcasting, you first need to go to our Add A Broadcast form. You can find this at Members, Add A Broadcast. You must Sign Up free to be a Member before this option is available to you.
You are required to provide information about you/your company and the channel you want to broadcast. The areas with a red * next to them are required information. Some of the information is for your and our eyes only, while other information will be included in your broadcast channel “Profile”. The Profile will allow viewers to learn more about your channel and you. You may use it to your advantage for marketing or whatever purpose you desire.
On the Add A Broadcast form, you have a download file that will allow you to install the Jetcast Server software. Please refer to our Server Manual which can be found in the Help section.
The Server Manual will show you how to Jetcast your channel and how to create a channel from media files on your PC/server.
The process is very easy and we at Jetcast hope you have a great experience.
C) Three Ways To Jetcast. The Jetcast Server software lets you Jetcast in three (3) different ways. Please refer to the Server Manual for detailed directions.
1. Stream. In the Source Addtions section, choose the Stream option. If you have some type of media server system to run your channel, it will provide a publishing address on your server/network. Server systems like Windows Server 2003 with Windows Media Services or inexpensive webcam softwares are available. In the Stream address area, you may copy and paste your mms or http stream addresses. The Jetcast Server will take this one stream and broadcast it within the jet:// network for your audience.
2. Directory. In the Source Additions section, choose the Directory option. By inserting the target directory, the Jetcast Server software will automatically search the directory and find any files with the acceptable formats and create a playlist. The Playlist will automatically be looped to create your channel.
3. File. In the Source Additions section, choose the File option. By inserting the file location on your PC/server, the Jetcast Server will allow you to build a channel with one file or many files. The File will automatically be looped to create your channel.
After downloading and installing the Jetcast Server software, please read the Server Manual and start Jetcasting.
D) How To Encode.
Files. This is one example for encoding files. This example uses Windows Media technology and has the following steps:
1. Go to www.microsoft.com to download their free Windows Media Encoder 9. This is a link to download - click here. The MicroSoft website may ask you to validate, and that process is quite simple. You will download the WMEncoder.exe file and Run to install. After it is downloaded and installed, the Microsoft website will thank you for installing the software. You will then have the Windows Media program on your Start, All Programs menu. You can choose Windows Media from All Program and choose Windows Media Encoder.
2. Start Windows Media Encoder. (You may also use this encoder to change bit rates of your channel files that may be encoded at another bit rate with Windows Media codecs .) The application will start and a New Session Wizard will appear. Choose the Convert A File icon. You will Browse to find the Source File and Browse to the target directory and enter in the target name of the encoded file. (Note: Windows Media Encoder will accept many file formats to encode. However, it will not accept DV files that are normally sourced from DVDs. To convert DVDs, you will need a DVD to AVI converter and a good one is www.yasasoft.com/videoconverter/ and it costs around $30. You may want to also look into Source Forge for a free converter http://mediacoder.sourceforge.net/.) After browsing and selecting, choose Next.
3. Choose Windows Media Server (streaming) and select Next.
4. Keep Video with the default Multiple bit rates video (CBR) and the Audio with the default Multiple bit rates audio (CBR). For the bit rate, choose the bit rate that you calculated to work with your broadband connection, such as 58 Kbps to equal 290k or 43 Kbps to equal 215k. (Note: Remember to have one bit rate selected only and to unselect all others not wanted. This will save you much time.) Choose Next.
5. Enter in your Title, Author, Copyright, Rating and Description information that you desire and choose Next and Finish after confirming the parameters.
With the files encoded to your preferences, you will then be able to use the Jetcast Server software to broadcast to an infinite audience size. Please see the Server Manual available in the Help section. You may select the Source on the Jetcast Server software to be Stream, Directory or File, depending if you have the separate media server software to create a broadcast channel or let the Jetcast Server software to create a playlist for you.
If you want to encode many files, it may be worth your time to do Batch encoding. To do so, you will need to download .NET and Windows Media SDK from Microsoft. If you have problems, do not hesitate to contact us at Jetcast and we will give you some tips.
Other free encoders are Source Forge, located at http://mediacoder.sourceforge.net/ and Real Basic located at www.realnetworks.com/products/producer/index.html.
Webcam.
To be able to broadcast live from your webcam, you will need to have software to convert the video data feed from your webcam. To broadcast live, you can buy and use any of the software available in the market. For live, we find that Webcam Tracker Live 1.1 from www.sytexis.com is good for $29.95 and Active Webcam from www.pysoft.com/ is good for $29.00. If you want to record webcam footage, you can use Webcam Tracker also from www.sytexis.com for $14.95. (Note: Jetcast does not support or recommend the software or websites and is only stating some applications that are available. You should do your own research before visiting, purchasing and using.)
With the webcam software of your preference in operation, you will then be able to use the Jetcast Server software to broadcast your webcam to an infinite audience size. For a Live Webcam, you will use the Stream selection and provide the stream address that is created by your webcam software. For a recorded webcam file that you record, you will use the File selection to broadcast.
We hope you have a great time Jetcasting.

What kind of computer should I have to use the Jetcast Player?
A Pentium 3 running at 1 GHz or faster will keep up with the processing requirements of today's video streams. To ensure best performance, get lots of RAM -- at least 128 MB, more if you can afford it. Of course, the faster the computer the better. We also suggest a stand alone computer if you have on for your broadcasting computer, however you can use any pc you have, as long as you always leave the Jetcast server application running the broadcast and the pc on.

The video will not start on a Jetcast channel. What is wrong?
Assuming you have already downloaded and installed the Jetcast Player, this problem can happen for four (4) reasons. The route to your connection through your ISP is having problems, your Internet Explorer is having problems, you may need the latest version of the Jetcast Player, or your Internet Explorer security is set to a high level.
To get the most recent version of the Jetcast Player, you can normally find it on the home page of Jetcast or on our download page in the Help section. Download, save to desktop, install or install using the desktop icon you created and start playing.
To set your Internet Explorer security to an acceptable level, please:
1. Choose Tools from the top menu bar of Internet Explorer
2. Choose Internet Options
3. Select the Security tab
4. Click on the Internet globe icon
5. Click on the Custom Level Button below
6. Enable all the ActiveX options (There are normally seven (7) of them)
7. Click on the Okay to accept the changes
8. Remaining in the Security tab, click on the green Trusted Sites icon
9. Click on the Site button
10. Enter in http:///www.jetcast.com
11. Click Okay to accept the change
12. Click Okay to totally get out of the Internet Options window

What software do I need besides the Jetcast Player?
All that is needed are programs called Windows Internet Explorer and the media players required by the individual broadcasters (they are free). If your PC does not have the required media player, the Jetcast player may detect and point you in the right direction to download the free software.

There's another one out there called VIDLIST.NET. It's kinda like peekvid only faster and without the banners.
